Featured Artist Nora Schöpfer from It's LIQUID

Nora Schöpfer, neither different nor separated series, dancing seconds. Photography

Nora Schöpfer

Nora Schöpfer born in Austria, studied Graphics and Painting at the University of Applied Art of Vienna, in the master class of the International Austrian artists Oswald Oberhuber and Ernst Caramelle. Her work has been shown in Europe and USA in various group and solo exhibitions, as well as through nominations and art prices. Currently she lives and works in Austria.

Since some years Nora Schöpfer has been working on several series, with names such as neither different nor separated, precious gaps, neither solid nor constant, which are a part of the work gaps between seconds. Visual investigation of timelessness presence and a view of interconnection between existences are the themes in the work, which are approaching splits of moments with a taste of fluid boundaries, seen in a material way as well as related to a concept of identity. The imagination of a flow from each material into another is leading back to the interdependence between now and eternity.

With the disappearance of a specific identity, achieved through formal overlays up to anonymous images, the intention of the artist is to face a precious quality of the now, beyond any identification and valuation of something known. Dealing with a paradox, Nora Schöpfer aspires to depict the fleeting nature of form and thus to approach the presence of a moment.

Affordable Art Fair México presents its first edition in Latin America!

October 19 – 21, 2012

Expo Reforma

Ave. Morelos 67, Col. Juárez | Cuauhtémoc, 06700 | México D.F.

Affordable Art Fair, the leading showcase internationally for contemporary art, arrives for the first time to Mexico and Latin America. It will be held from October 19th to the 21st at Expo Reforma, located in the heart of Mexico City near the famous Reforma Avenue.

For three days, Mexico City´s residents aka Chilangos, will enjoy contemporary art from 40 galleries, mostly national but also a strong presence of international galleries, through paintings, graphics, sculptures, photographs and drawings. The relaxed format that has characterized AAF since its first edition in London over 10 years ago, invites attendees to browse freely not only the details of each work, but also its prices, which will be on display throughout the show.

Among the galleries that will take part on this first edition are Aldama Fine Art, Ethra, Terreno Baldío Arte, Garash, Altiplano, Yautepec, Fifty24mx, Jesús Villafán from Oaxaca, No Name Gallery from Guadalajara, and the Veracruz Institute of Culture featuring winning artists in last year´s Veracruz Biennale. Among them, countries such as Cuba with Galería Avistamientos and Guatemala with Arthis, will take part.

Reynerio Tamayo, La Ola. Courtesy of Avistamientos.

Affordable Art Fair México will present a Young Talent Show where people will have the chance to discover masterpieces by young artists who just started their careers. The exhibition is part of the Educational Program supported by AXA, and will be showing the work of new artists selected through an open call held during September by Cultura Colectiva, in order to encourage the career or these young artists and provide greater visibility for them in this field.

Another aspect of the Educational Program will be the print workshops in which the public can learn about the processes behind the different techniques and learn how to create their own works of art.
For the youngest there is also place inside Affordable Art Fair, an educational space that seeks to encourage and facilitate the creative development of children and youth through art.

This first edition will also have great allies to foster affordable contemporary art in Mexico in a fun way. There will be talks and lectures with renowned speakers and topics for both beginners and professionals in art. All these activities will be offered at no extra cost to the attendees.

Undoubtedly, Affordable Art Fair México will be a come to revolutionize not only the way we appreciate art, but also the way we enjoy it, live it and buy it.

Wade Guyton

Whitney Museum OCTOBER 10–23

Exhibitions BACK TO TOP Signs & Symbols
"Works whose essentials anyone anywhere could relate to"—The New York Times
Through October 28

Adolph Gottlieb
Drawn from the Whitney’s collection, Signs & Symbols sheds new light on the developments of abstraction in American art during the 1940s and 1950s. Looking beyond Abstract Expressionism, toward the figurative and calligraphic “signs and symbols” present in much of the highly controlled work of this period, this exhibition features works by seminal artists including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Adolph Gottlieb, among others.
Oskar Fischinger:
Space Light Art—A Film Environment

"At once relaxing and stimulating, and possibly hypnotic"—Artinfo
Through October 28

Oskar Fischinger
This exhibition presents one of the first multimedia projections ever made: Oskar Fischinger’s Raumlichtkunst (Space Light Art), a re-creation of his multiple-screen film events, first shown in Germany in 1926, and recently restored by the Center for Visual Music in Los Angeles. Radical in format, its display of abstract shapes and colors produces, according to Fischinger, “an intoxication by light from a thousand sources.”
Fireflies on the Water
Through October 28
Yayoi Kusama
Yayoi Kusama’s depictions of seemingly endless space have been a central focus of her artistic career. Kusama’s Fireflies on the Water (2002)—with its carefully constructed environment of lights, mirrors, and water—is one of the outstanding examples of this kind of installation, which creates a space in which individual viewers are invited to transcend their sense of self.
Special timed tickets are required for entry into Fireflies on the Water. Tickets are free with Museum admission and available day-of-visit on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend you arrive early. Wade Guyton OS
"The Whitney Museum has a hit on its hands: a beautiful show organized by a young curator that makes a cogent case for the work of a young artist."The New York Times
Through January 13, 2013
Wade Guyton Over the past decade, New York–based artist Wade Guyton has pioneered a groundbreaking body of work that explores our changing relationships to images and artworks through the use of common digital technologies, such as the desktop computer, scanner, and inkjet printer. Guyton’s purposeful misuse of these tools to make paintings and drawings results in beautiful accidents that relate to the ways in which we haltingly navigate the visual and technological barrage of our time.

Stow Wengenroth
Images, like words, can trigger a cultural or emotional response to a shared national ethos. Artists have employed images—sometimes straightforwardly, often obliquely—in order to comment on a country, its people, its political or social goals, and its self-image. This exhibition explores this phenomenon through a rotating installation, drawn from the Whitney’s collection, of works on paper by a diverse group of artists including Robert Bechtle, Enrique Chagoya, Howard Cook, William N. Copley, Edward Hopper, Willard Midgette, Joseph Pennell, Benton Spruance, and Stow Wengenroth.
