Al/che/my  New Works by Grey Zeien

Paintings and Sculptures
Wikipedia defines alchemy as "a process by which paradoxical results are achieved or incompatible elements combined with no obvious rational explanation". Another definition of alchemy is the "search for a method to turn dross into gold".

Grey Alchemy rewarded 4 panels
For over 20 years Grey Zeien has produced work by combining compatible elements, letting the inherent differences in the media act and counteract with each other, creating surface tensions that cannot be planned or completely controlled.

Bending and shaping these disparate media, Zeien makes paintings that are engaging in their bold color, sophisticated in their structure, sometimes revelatory and at times even whimsical. Oil paints combined and layered over acrylics, mixed with water-based inks and dyes create effects that no sleight of hand can completely control.

The addition of gold leaf in this show of new works add yet another layer of surface tension. The flat reflective gold icons stand apart from the roiling surface underneath. In the larger images, the myriad of small gold icons float above the environment that threatens to overwhelm them. In the smaller works, the icons dominate the picture. What the icons depict and what their relationship to each other means, has an individual resonance and story for each individual viewer to decipher in their own terms.
In his sculpture, says Zeien, "I seek to turn found, discarded objects into art. By reclaiming and transforming "garbage", I show the beauty that is inherent in the most commonplace object. "
This recycling is alchemy indeed.

Al/che/my is on view at BAU Gallery from Saturday September 8 through Sunday, October 7. Please note the artist's reception will be held on Friday September 14, at 6pm. The gallery is open weekends, noon through 6pm. Visit baugallery.com for more information.

Art Plural Gallery - Bernar Venet: A Solo Exhibition

Bernar Venet: A Solo Exhibition - Art Plural Gallery
Art Plural Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of French artist Bernar Venet in Singapore.

BERNAR VENET: A SOLO EXHIBITION
26 SEPTEMBER - 24 NOVEMBER 2012

GRIB 3 2011 - Torch-cut waxed steel - 238 x 410 x 3.5 cm

Art Plural Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of French artist Bernar Venet in Singapore.

The exhibition runs from 26th September to 24th November 2012.

French artist Bernar Venet has been exploring the notions of indetermination, disorder, chance, and unpredictability with perseverance for decades. For this exhibition, Bernar Venet will show new sculptural reliefs from his GRIB series and paintings from his Saturation and Shaped Canvases series.

Today, I have much more freedom in my choice of subjects. I select them for their originality, for their remoteness, on the visual level, from anything, as far as I know, that other artists have ever painted. - Bernar Venet

Artegate Gallery - Nothing Sound in it and Nothing True

Nothing sound in it and nothing true | Opening reception September 6

Nothing sound in it and nothing true

Ira Eduardovna and Heeseop Yoon | September 6 - 29

Opening reception September 6, 6 - 8 PM

ArtGate Gallery is pleased to present NOTHING SOUND IN IT AND NOTHING TRUE, a two person show featuring Ira Eduardovna and Heeseop Yoon. Eduardovna and Yoon examine changes in perception and memory through their video and drawing installations. The show will run from September 6 through September 29. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 6 from 6-8 PM.

Ira Eduardovna was born in the USSR and immigrated to Israel at age ten. Born under a failing communist regime and escaping to yet another conflict-ridden region, her childhood was full of turmoil. Eduardovna, who is now based in New York, recreates and deconstructs her childhood memories in her autobiographical videos which often star herself and her family. Her movies feature repetitive motions and shifting perspectives, often lacking a sense of closure. Her videos are vague: both the viewer and the subjects remain unidentified, the actions are unexplained, creating a sense of mystery and leaving things open for interpretation.

Heeseop Yoon’s process begins with a photograph of a cluttered interior. She then constructs a view from her photographs and draws her subject matter freehand, using narrow black masking tape as her main tool. Rather than correcting any mistakes, she simply creates new lines that overlap with the errors. The multiple lines reflect how Yoon’s perception changes over time. The result is a large scale clutter of lines that intersect and cross over at random spots yet join together to create a paradoxically realistic chaos.

While the events of our past never change, our memories are being constantly altered with the passage of time.  New experiences provide a new lens to look back on the past, creating multiple realities out of a fixed point in time. Ira Eduardovna and Heeseop Yoon record their personal changes with their boundary-pushing installations depicting something that once was as how they see it now.

The highlight of the show is one of Andy Warhol's most notable portraits, 'Blue Jackie' executed in 1964 at the height of his most celebrated period. This painting belongs to the iconic 'Jackie' silkscreen series and combines Warhol's ground-breaking 'Death and Disaster series' with his contemporaneous fascination with celebrity culture. 'Blue Jackie' is a stellar representation of Warhol's significant and unparalleled contribution to the visual arts.
