Lowcountry Reflections: The Fine Art Prints of Jonathan Green
The Art Institute of Charleston, 24 North Market Street
Admission: Free

Jonathan Green, painter and printmaker, was born and raised in the small Gullah community of Gardens Corner located near the South Carolina Sea Islands and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1982 from The Art Institute of Chicago. Green's early life was greatly influenced by his grandmother who relied heavily on oral traditions to instill in him the values and traditions of his African and African-American heritage. The customs and mores internalized by Green stressed the importance of the work ethic and a commitment to community values with a respect for the dignity and integrity of others. While his appeal and perspective are truly modern and cosmopolitan, Green looks to the familiar images of his ancestral home for the subjects of his paintings. In his art, Green draws upon his own intimate personal experiences, steeped in the traditions of family, community and life in the Southern United States. Each of his paintings is a testament to the motivating power of place capturing the continuity of the past combined with the energy, exuberance and creativity of the present. Exhibit on view September 29-October 30, open Monday-Thursday from 9am-8pm, Friday from 9am-5pm, Saturday from 9am-2pm.SPONSORED BY: The Art Institute of Charleston.

Installation of Untitled by Nils Folke Anderson

The Dikeou Collection is pleased to announce the installation of Untitled (Bannock & California), a sculpture by Nils Folke Anderson

Opening at 1331 Bannock St on Friday, September 30th, 2011
6-8pm.

Additionally, Nils Folke Anderson will present an artist's talk on Saturday, September 24th, 2011, 5-7pm at the Dikeou Collection, 1615 California St, Suite 515, off 16th St Mall.

Anderson's work emerges from a tradition of Minimalism, combining the forms of demigods like Serra, Judd, and LeWitt with the movements and kineticism of Trisha Brown. Constructed from a series of large interlocking square frames made of the unlikely material of expanded polystyrene, the 631?2 lb “giant” creates the illusion of formality while literally playing with the very virtues it seems to extol.

During the opening, Anderson will re-arrange the piece through the space to display the work as a “continuous sculpture” being shifted to defined and redefined 3-dimensional positions, moving in and of itself to demonstrate a principle of interrelation dubbed “reciprocal linkage” by the artist. In reciprocal linkage all of the frames are functionally equivalent in size, shape, material, color; but the work as a whole is infinitely adaptable via human movement. This movement, as in dance, is open ended, almost as if the piece—like an audio recording—is put on “pause” then once again set in motion. The shifting in turn deteriorates the massive monument as it is repositioned, creating site-specific detritus of polystyrene that become breadcrumbs in a forest of Minimalist forms.

Interestingly, in sourcing the material for the sculpture we discovered that Denver is a major hub for polystyrene production—tying this piece in with the manufacturing sector of our city.

The work of Nils Folke Anderson has been exhibited at the Robert Miller Gallery, Phillips de Pury, the Whitney Art Party, and Robert Wilson?s Watermill Foundation, among other venues, and he will be completing a permanent public sculpture in Ilford, UK to coincide with the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games. In the context of the nearby Denver Art Museum, Anderson has previously collaborated with Studio Daniel Libeskind on a proposal for the Malmö Concert Hall in Malmö, Sweden.

The Dikeou Collection is a private collection of contemporary art, located at 1615 California St on the 5th floor. It is open to the public Wednesday-Friday 11-5 and by appointment.

Artists in the Collection include: Vik Muniz, Rainer Ganahl, Simon Periton, Juan Gomez, Sarah Staton, Serge Onnen, Dan Asher, Momoyo Torimitsu, Lee Stoetzel, Jonathan Horowitz, Misaki Kawai, Ester Partegas, Chris Gilmour, Paul Ramirez Jonas, The Royal Art Lodge, Drue Langlois, Janine Gordon, Wade Guyton, Chris Johanson, Lawrence Seward, Lisa Kereszi, Agathe Snow, Johannes Van der Beek, Devon Dikeou, Margaret Lee, Luis Macias, Tracy Nakayama, Giasco Bertoli, Joshua Smith, Lizzie Bougatsos, Lucky DeBellevue, Anya Keilar, and Nils Folke Anderson.

Bryce Cameron Liston Solo Exhibition - Figures of Timeless Beauty

FIGURES OF TIMELESS BEAUTY
Bryce Cameron Liston Solo Exhibition

On Display from October 7, 2011 – October 31, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC (October 2011)- M Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition featuring the work of Bryce Cameron Liston. The show, entitled Figures of Timeless Beauty, will hang from October 7th – October 31st. The show will include at least ten of Liston’s paintings and possibly some drawings. All of the paintings will depict the female form and will include both interior and exterior scenes. The opening reception will be held on Friday, October 7th, in tandem with the First Friday Art Walk. There will be a Collectors’ Preview held the night before the event on Thursday October 6th.

The pieces that will comprise the show are intended to impart timelessness and continuity— impressions that the artist hopes will stay with the viewer long after they review his work. “I hate the thought of my artwork being or becoming outdated,” Liston explains, “I want the viewer to be able to say that painting is of someone right here, right now, or maybe of someone fifty years ago. Sure, clothing and hairstyle change, but other aspects of life, imagery, emotions, etc. do not and have not for hundreds of thousands of years.”

Liston believes that a good figurative painting has to contain four basic components including: correct anatomy; good composition; strong artistic elements such as shape, value, and edge; and finally, emotion or atmosphere. “I’ve spent my entire career as a painter trying to master these essentials and I think this collection of work embodies these concepts,” he says.

Liston has three favorite pieces that will appear in Figures of Timeless Beauty: Red, Blue, and Yellow. Each piece focuses on the balance of color and the effects of light on color, they also balance the literal and conceptual. They were painted in Liston’s studio using three of his best models. If Liston had to choose his favorite piece in Figures of Timeless Beauty, he would choose Red.

Although he studied art the University of Utah, Liston considers himself a primarily self-taught artist. If he had to name a mentor, he would choose renowned sculptor Edward Fraughton. “I worked for Ed in his foundry for over 15 years. I learned an invaluable amount from him during that time, particularly about human anatomy and gesture. It’s odd to say I learned how to paint from a sculptor, but to a certain extent it’s true,” he confesses.

As for influences, he names the great American illustrators such as Newell Convers Wyeth and Howard Pyle as his earliest sources of inspiration. Later in life, however, Liston gravitated towards the likes of John William Waterhouse and John Singer Sargent.

The human form heavily inspires Liston. “People are beautiful, mysterious, ever- changing and completely individual. I never, ever tire of drawing, painting and sculpting the human figure and I very strongly believe I never will. I think Michelangelo said it best: And who is so barbarous as not to understand that the foot of a man is nobler than his shoe.”

"... Making a home, whatever through physical renovation or an internal sense of comfort, remains a constant, universal issue for many women. In an atmosphere of perceived external threats to security, the home is a source of calm, but it is also a place that is often overly decorated, orderly to the point of perfection, and excessive as an expression of woman’s status. As a woman artist, I am addressing the double edge of domesticity; the home provides comfort but can also be place where embellishment can substitute for internal ills, or hide personal truths ..."
