UBS 12 x 12: New Artists / New Work: Ann Toebbe October 8-30, 2011

UBS 12 x 12: AnnToebbe
 First Fridays

UBS 12 x 12: New Artists / New Work: Ann Toebbe
October 8-30, 2011

Chicago artist Ann Toebbe's latest collage paintings were inspired by her husband's grandmother, Mary Bard's 1949 book The Doctor Wears Three Faces about the expectations and isolation of being a doctor's wife, which was made into the movie Mother Didn't Tell Me. Herself a mother of two, Toebbe began thinking about the role of women within the home, then and now, and the ongoing centrality of the kitchen within domestic life.  Toebbe's exhibition debuts at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, on October 7, 2011 during First Fridays and runs through October 30. After ten years, Toebbe is the final artist of the UBS 12 x 12: New Artists/New Work series at the MCA before it evolves into the Chicago Works program in November.

Comprised of three large-scale collage paintings made of individually cut and painted pieces of paper --The Doctor's Wife (7 x 10 ft), The Grocer's Wife (6 x 8 ft), and The Photo Engraver's Wife (6 x 8 ft) -- Toebbe's exhibit is based on conversations she had with her mother, mother-in-law, and step-mother-in-law centered on fond memories of their childhood kitchens, and the difficulties of being married and a mother in the 1940s and 50s. They each wrote a short text and made a drawing describing their mother's kitchen, which Toebbe uses as the basis of her paintings. Her vivid visions of domestic spaces bring to life often overlooked details of the environments of daily life, which become the cornerstone of memories. They also reflect issues of class difference and a shared material culture. The disorienting, flattened perspective derives from her study of Russian icon painting, Cubism, and folk art.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Toebbe received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA from Yale University, and now resides in Chicago. Toebbe's work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Chicago, New York, Boston, Cincinnati, and San Francisco, among others.

5 Pieces Gallery/ Focus on... Scott Everingham

Focus on... Scott Everingham

born 1978 in Toronto, Canada
Scott Everingham is a painter who manipulates paint the way a writer may use a collection of words - translating the language into a visual explanation of what is around him, and attempting to develop landscapes and environments that are at once representations of paint, and life. Much of his painterly process is influenced by fiction: literature, film, and imagery that surrounds him. This allows a freedom to occur directly on the canvas - where most of his ultimate choices take place, with his preparation occurring while reading or viewing.
Slowly the spaces he is singularly involved in become metaphors for the structure, balance, and hope of his own life, yet each work is alive with time (or lack thereof), light, and movement. Often upheaval ensues - perhaps as an allegorical approach to insecurity, distrust, or the inability to completely understand death. In the end, it's a visual story-telling that expresses how paint can describe a mental state while suggesting that the audience is an active participant.
Scott Everingham holds a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, and an MFA from the University of Waterloo, and was a semi-finalist in the 11th and 12th RBC Painting Competitions. He recently won a Canada Council for the Arts Project Grant, and had his work Dear Life purchased by the Canada Council Art Bank. He lives and works in Toronto.

Art League of Long Island: The Many Faces of Richard Gachot Exhibiting Through September 25

logo banner
The Many Faces
of Richard Gachot
Exhibiting Through September 25

 artwork photo
Deviltry, (Industry No. 8), 1995, Richard Gachot

This exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of major works that feature found object sculptor Richard Gachot's signature style. Gachot's capacity for assemblage and mechanical invention fuses with whimsy and wit, producing works that are ironic, at times searing, indictments of common foibles, and abuses of the environment, real estate development,
and recurring patterns of behavior or belief.

Gallery visitors are invited to comment in the gallery guest book. Recent visitor comments include:

"What a fabulous imagination!",
"Terrific - so much fun to view",
"This artist really has 'the sight' to be able to see other fanciful things in the shapes of ordinary
objects like chairs, lard buckets and shoe trees..",
"The way that this artist sees such things in what most would judge as junk is absolutely stunning.
I especially love the Pollux and Castor sculpture. This whole exhibit was great!",
"Please consider keeping this exhibit going FOREVER!"

The gallery is open to the public free of charge, Monday - Friday 9am through 4pm
and on weekends 11am through 4pm.
Please ask for assistance if you wish to activate the kinetic sculptures on display.

Beyond Eden Special Feature: Cannibal Flower
The Cannibal Flower Art Gallery and Performance Space is a once-a-month, portable venue that showcases art, music, dance, film, projections, magic and fashion shows. Started in the year 2000 by L.Croskey, Jean-Paul Garnier, Michele Waterman as a means for a group of friends to showcase their art and music without having to deal with the politics of the conventional gallery, Cannibal Flower believes that if there's an artist that's truly passionate and dedicated to what they do, they deserve a chance to be seen. Cannibal Flower aims  to create artist unity and collaboration, hence the beauty and liveliness of their "venue" being portable. By working with other galleries and alternative spaces, they not only bring promotion to other locations but bring the arts to wider audience. Every Cannibal Flower show is entirely different, bringing in all walks and groups of people young and old.

Cannibal Flower's Beyond Eden installation will feature Sean Joyce, Lauren Haggis , Kelly Berg , William Zdan, Andrea Iakovidis, Mimi Yoon, Nate Seubert, Cody Lusby, Stephen Williams, Michael Christy, N.S.
